Everyone sees the London Eye from the top deck… but that’s not where London becomes memorable.
The real magic happens when you ring the bell, hop off the bus, and wander just a few minutes away from the crowds.
After riding these routes more times than I can count, these are my favorite hidden gems you can reach directly from London’s hop-on hop-off bus routes

1. Postman’s Park (Stop: St. Paul’s Cathedral)

Most people spend hours inside St. Paul’s… then jump straight back on the bus.
I used to do the same until I randomly walked 3 minutes away and found this.
The Gem: A quiet park hiding the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice
Why it’s cool: Hand-painted tiles telling real stories of ordinary people who died saving others.
It’s one of the few places in London that genuinely makes you stop and think.
2. St. Dunstan in the East (Stop: Tower of London)

Instead of following the crowd to the Beefeaters, walk 5 minutes into the City.
The Gem: A bombed 12th-century church turned into a garden
Why it’s cool: Trees and vines growing through gothic arches.
This is easily the most underrated photo spot in London - and somehow still feels peaceful.
3. The Silver Vaults (Stop: Chancery Lane / Fleet Street)

This one feels like you’ve discovered something you weren’t supposed to.
The Gem: Underground maze of antique silver shops
Why it’s cool: You walk through old bank vaults like you’re in a heist movie.
Completely different vibe from anything else on a London itinerary.
4. St. Bride’s Church – The “Wedding Cake” (Stop: Fleet Street)

Most people don’t even notice this one from the bus.
The Gem: The iconic tiered spire
Why it’s cool: Inspired the first-ever tiered wedding cake (legend says).
Once you know it, you can’t unsee it.
5. Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel (Stop: London Eye / Waterloo)

Right next to the most touristy area… is one of the grittiest.
The Gem: A legal graffiti tunnel
Why it’s cool: It changes every time you visit.
I love the contrast—5 minutes from Parliament, and you’re in a completely different world.
6. The London Mithraeum (Stop: Bank / Mansion House)

Hidden under the financial district… literally.
The Gem: A Roman temple to Mithras
Why it’s cool: Atmospheric lights + ancient chanting recreate the past.
It’s one of the most unique free experiences in London.
7. Borough Market (Stop: London Bridge / Monument)

T
his isn’t “hidden”… but most people don’t do it right.
The Gem: London’s most famous food market
Why it’s cool: The best lunch stop on any bus route.
My move? Cross London Bridge first for the Shard view, then go straight for food.
8. Kyoto Garden (Stop: Holland Park)

This feels like you’ve left London completely.
The Gem: A Japanese garden with waterfalls and koi
Why it’s cool: Pure calm in the middle of the city.
Perfect reset after a busy morning on the bus.
9. Cecil Court (Stop: Leicester Square / Charing Cross)

Blink and you’ll miss it.
The Gem: A hidden street of bookshops
Why it’s cool: Feels like stepping into Harry Potter.
One of my favorite quick detours in central London.
10. Roman Wall at Tower Hill (Stop: Tower of London)

Everyone queues for the Tower… but misses this.
The Gem: 1,800-year-old Roman wall
Why it’s cool: You can literally touch ancient London - for free.
Look closely: Roman bricks at the bottom, medieval stone on top.
The “Real Traveler” Verdict
The best London trips aren’t about ticking off landmarks.
They’re about finding the layers in between.
If you use your hop-on hop-off bus the right way, getting off just a few stops earlier, walking a few minutes further, you stop being a tourist…
…and start feeling like you’ve discovered London.
