bus + cruise + walking tour london

If you’re like me, you don’t just want a seat on a bus; you want the best bang for your buck. I’ve spent more hours than I’d like to admit riding these red double-deckers, and I’ve found that what’s "included" varies wildly.

Here is my unfiltered, accuracy-first breakdown of the five major London players.

1. Tootbus: The "Tech-Forward" Choice

I personally think Tootbus is winning the digital game. Their "Must See London" package is packed with tech extras you won't find elsewhere.

  • 24-Hour Ticket Includes: The bus, a one-way river cruise, a dedicated kids' audio guide, and 4 self-guided walking tours via their app. Plus, you get an AI City Guide where you can ask 5 free questions - perfect for when you're wondering, "Wait, who actually lives in that house?"

  • The 48-Hour Reality: Interestingly, the 48-hour ticket is just a time extension. In my experience, you don't get extra physical perks here, just more time to finish those 4 app-tours.

2. Big Bus London: The "Guided Walk" Expert

I’ve found Big Bus is the go-to if you want to get off the bus and actually walk the streets with a human guide.

  • 24-Hour Ticket Includes: The standard bus loops and a one-way river cruise.

  • The 48-Hour Perk: This is where the value jumps. The 48-hour ticket unlocks 3 guided walking tours: The Royal Walk, Jack the Ripper, and a Harry Potter tour.

In my opinion, the Royal Walk is the absolute best walking tour in London. Witnessing the Changing of the Guard is a major highlight of any trip, but experiencing it with a knowledgeable guide adds a massive layer of value you just don't get on your own. Whether you're a Harry Potter fan or a history buff, that 48-hour upgrade is a total no-brainer for the guided walks alone.

3. City Sightseeing: The "Route Master"

They have a very unique 48-hour offering.

  • 24-Hour Ticket Includes: The bus and a standard river cruise.

  • 48-Hour Ticket Perk:  The 48-hour pass includes a scenic ride on a vintage Routemaster bus and a much better return cruise all the way to Greenwich and back.

  • The 72-Hour Bonus: If you go for 3 days, they throw in the Night Tour.

4. TopView: The "All-In" Value King

TopView is the newcomer that is trying to out-bundle everyone else. If you want the most "stuff" on your pass, this is it.

  • 24-Hour Ticket Includes: The bus, the cruise, and a Jack the Ripper walking tour.

  • 48-Hour Ticket Perk: This is a massive jump. You get the bus, the cruise, a Night Tour, and 3 walking tours (Jack the Ripper, Royal Park, and the London Entertainers walk).

For the sheer volume of activities, I’d say TopView offers the most "perks per pound" on their 48-hour pass.

5. Golden Tours: The "Live Guide" Experience

I’ll be honest: I pick Golden Tours when I’m tired of pre-recorded audio. They still have live guides on many of their buses.

  • 24-Hour Ticket Includes: The bus, the cruise, and 2 guided walking tours.

  • The 48-Hour Reality: Just like Tootbus, the 48-hour ticket doesn't add extra perks. You get the same cruise and walks as the 24-hour crowd, just more bus time.

My "Real Traveler" Ranking: Who Wins?

Rank

Company

Why I Picked Them

1st (Best)

The King of Perks. The 48-hr ticket including a Night Tour + 3 walks is unbeatable.

2nd

The Greenwich Advantage. That 48-hr cruise to Greenwich is the best boat ride in London.

3rd

The Guided Experience. Best for those who want real human guides for the walking tours.

4th

The Tech Winner. Best app and self-guided flexibility, but no "extra" perks for the 48-hr stay.

5th

The Live Vibe. Great if you hate headphones, but the 48-hr ticket is underwhelming.

Pro Tip: Don’t Get "Perk-Blinded"

Now, a quick word of advice: just because a company offers the most 'extras' doesn't automatically mean they are the best tour in town. In the world of London buses, some operators pile on the freebies specifically to compensate for fewer buses on the road or confusing routes. In my experience, Big Bus remains the most reliable. They’ve been doing this for over 30 years and their route design is simply the best. They hit the heavy hitters more efficiently and their buses are everywhere. My advice? Look at the perks, but remember that a 'free walking tour' isn't worth much if you’ve spent two hours waiting at a bus stop to get there. Pick carefully.

My "Insider" Verdict: 24 vs 48 Hours?

I’ve found that the 48-hour ticket is only worth it if you’re booking Big Bus, City Sightseeing, or TopView.

If you're going with Tootbus or Golden Tours, you get all the "goodies" in the first 24 hours. Trust me on this: Check the "extras" list before you pay for that second day. Sometimes, you’re just paying for an extra seat, not an extra experience!
